Nature is just amazing - I saw one of these once and thought the ants were on crack or something... lol The death spiral - Ants use a pheromone trail for navigation, if they lose this trail of pheromones, they may start to follow one another, leading them to walk around in circles until either the circle is broken or they die from exhaustion. More: The ant death spiral, also known as an ant mill, occurs when a group of army ants loses the pheromone trail they use for navigation, causing them to follow each other in a circular pattern.

This phenomenon was first described in 1921 by William Beebe, who observed a mill 370 meters in circumference, taking each ant two and a half hours to complete one revolution.

The behavior is a result of a feedback loop where each ant follows the one in front, leading to a continuous cycle that can end in exhaustion and death for the ants involved.

Similar circular behaviors have been noted in other species, such as processionary caterpillars and fish, indicating a broader pattern in nature where loss of navigational cues can lead to such spirals.
