The Williams Treaties were intended to retroactively extinguish Aboriginal title to large tracts of land that had never been formally surrendered by earlier treaties
1. The Crawford Purchases (1783–1784)
2. The Toronto Purchase (1787/1805)
3. Gunshot Treaty or Collins Purchase (1788)
4. Penetanguishene and Lake Simcoe Agreements (1815–1818)
5. Robinson-Huron Treaty (1850) — related, not replaced
Why the Williams Treaties Were Needed
• Many of the “early purchases” lacked clear boundaries, did not involve all Indigenous nations, or were not lawfully executed.
• By 1923, Canada and Ontario feared land claims would arise over the unsurrendered 20,000 km², so they rushed to sign new treaties (the Williams Treaties) to:
o Extinguish Aboriginal title
o Pay minimal compensation
o Deny harvesting rights (a key source of legal disputes later)
