My old toaster, which had plenty of good features, died after about a year of use. It had to be replaced and after some research, I decided to go with this top of the range model from Sage (marketed outside of the UK under the Breville brand name). I already own a SAGE breadmaker, which has impressed me greatly with its build quality, design and ease of use and so, after baulking at first at the £179 price, I pulled the trigger for their pretentiously named "The Smart Toast™ 4-Slice Toaster.

The presentation and build quality are both first rate, as they should be for the price. The toaster really does have a premium feel to it mirrored in the presentation although less so with the user guide, which is well written and nicely printed but rather less verbose than I was expecting.
Yes, all you get in the box is the toaster and the user guide.

SAGE also make a £139 2-slice version of this toaster which is more or less identical as regards its functionality. In fact, it could be said that the 2000w 4 slice toaster is just two of the smaller 1000w models stuck together. Facing the front of the toaster we see the two identically laid out sets of buttons, each controlling one pair of toasting slots with buttons for Start/Cancel, A Quick Look, Crumpet/Fruit Loaf, Frozen, and A Bit More. Each button lights up when pressed to show it has been engaged.

To operate insert the bread, crumpet, bagel or other food item, use the slider below to select the toasting level and press the button combination you need, for example, Start plus Frozen. To use all four slots at the same time you need to select the buttons from both sets and also the toasting level. The buttons illuminate, the automated mechanism lowers the bread into the slot and the LED progress bar lights up. When completed the bread slowly rises out of the slot automatically and a beeper sounds.

It has a few novel features.
A Quick Look
At any point you can press the A Quick Look button and the bread will rise up wait for a second and then descend again without affecting the selected toasting time.
A Bit More
If you are not happy with the browning level at the end, press the A Bit More button and it will give about another 30 seconds of toasting. Crumpet/Fruit Loaf
Place the crumpet with the top facing inwards and that side will be toasted more than the crumpet base. This can be also used to toast bagels. There are markings between the toasting slots to confirm positioning.

That is about it as regards innovative features. It is worth noting the slots are extra wide and well suited to doorstep slices from homemade loaves. However, the slots are of normal length only, fine for standard sliced bread but not for anything longer than that. Sage do make toasters, I believe with longer slots to accommodate extra long slices.

The toast comes out evenly and consistently toasted between slots and slices with crumbs easily removed from the two front facing trays. So far I have had no unwanted or unexpected results, it just works every time even when the settings are different between the two toasting modules.

This toaster is certainly not inexpensive, and I have to say I have seen much cheaper models offering most if not all the features available here. But I am happy with my purchase, because it looks great, works well and gets the job done. That is good enough for me.
