Suspect’s Refusal to Comply Ends in Fatal Houston Police Shooting

On May 23, 2025, Houston Police Officers responded to a report of a trespasser at a nearby business strip and were told by security at the location that a male suspect, armed with a bat, had refused to leave the property. The security officer stated the suspect had assaulted him with the bat earlier in the day. HPD officers located the suspect nearby and attempted to make contact with him. However, the suspect began to wield a baseball bat at the officers in an attempt to strike them and refused to comply with officers’ verbal commands in English and in Spanish.

HPD officers then deployed their Conducted Emergency Devices (CEDs) multiple times at the suspect, without effect. The male suspect then proceeded to pick up a concrete rock with his right hand while continuing to hold the baseball bat in his left hand. He then aggressively approached both officers. One officer then discharged his duty weapon more than one time, striking the suspect. Responding Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced the male deceased at the scene. The identity of the deceased male suspect, 64, is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
