Israeli PM Netanyahu told ABC that killing Iran's Supreme Leader would end the conflict, not escalate it.
Al Jazeera's senior political analyst Marwan Bishara lambasts Netanyahu’s call for assassinating Iran’s supreme leader as “short-sighted and criminal,” warning it would trigger uncontrollable regional upheaval.
He argues Netanyahu sounds desperate, relying solely on Trump for an exit strategy from an unwinnable attrition war with Iran. Bishara highlights divisions in Trump’s camp, with isolationist Republicans like Marjorie Taylor Greene opposing Middle East entanglement, while neocons push for intervention.
He dismisses Trump’s foreign policy as hollow campaign rhetoric, noting his failures in Ukraine and Gaza. Historically, Bishara stresses that Middle East conflicts breed perpetual instability - Israel’s “victories” since 1948 have only spawned more wars.
Bishara warns that Western attempts to reimpose a Sykes-Picot-style dominance are doomed, as asymmetrical warfare defies conventional notions of victory. Netanyahu’s gambit, he concludes, risks catastrophic blowback for Israel and the region.
