Under English common law, rooted in the constitutional framework, there exists a principle that laws deemed repugnant to natural justice or God's law are null and void. The recent abortion law, passed on June 17, 2025, decriminalising abortion at any stage, is seen by most as repugnant to God's law, which upholds the sanctity of life. If the King assents to this law, critics argue he violates his coronation oath to uphold justice and God's law, effectively abdicating his constitutional role. By aligning with a parliamentary act that defies the common law's moral underpinnings, he risks undermining the monarchy's legitimacy, as the Crown is bound to act within the constitutional limits set by divine and natural law. Thus, the common law constitution, not Parliament, remains the true sovereign, and repugnant laws stand null before it.
