In 2015, researchers discovered two microscopic nematodes in the Siberian permafrost, estimated to be 32,000 and 41,000 years old, respectively.

These nematodes, identified as Panagrolaimus kolymaensis, were revived after being thawed in a petri dish, exhibiting signs of movement and cloning themselves.

The discovery suggests that these worms can survive in a dormant state for tens of thousands of years, far longer than previously thought possible for any organism.

The revival of these ancient nematodes raises concerns about the potential release of other ancient microorganisms from melting permafrost due to global warming, which could have unknown ecological and health impacts.
