Daily Readings | Where Moth and Rust Destroy: The Expiration Date on Everything | June 20, 2025
June 20, 2025 - Friday of the Eleventh Week in Ordinary Time - Daily Readings from the Catholic Lectionary
Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. This isn't budgeting advice but diagnostic test for discovering what you actually worship. Show me your calendar and credit card statement, I'll show you your real religion. Not what you claim Sundays but practice Monday through Friday. Treasure isn't just money but whatever you think will make you secure, significant, satisfied—whatever you believe will deliver the life you want.
Jesus' teaching about treasure in Matthew 6:19-23 addressed common concerns in an agricultural economy where wealth was often stored in forms vulnerable to natural destruction (moths eating clothing, rust corroding metals) and human theft (breaking into homes with mud-brick walls).
The metaphor of the eye as "lamp of the body" reflected ancient understanding that the eye was both receiver and projector of light. A "healthy" eye (haplous in Greek) meant clear, single-focused vision, while an "unhealthy" eye (poneros) suggested divided or envious vision.
Paul's catalog of sufferings in 2 Corinthians 11:21-30 (written around 55-56 CE) contrasted his authentic apostolic credentials with false apostles who boasted of earthly achievements and comfortable ministries. His willingness to endure hardship demonstrated that his treasure was located in heavenly rather than earthly securities.
The principle "where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" established foundational Christian understanding that spiritual health depends on proper treasure location—investing in eternal rather than temporal securities, finding identity in divine rather than human approval.
This teaching became central to Christian discipleship, requiring ongoing evaluation of what we actually trust for security, significance, and satisfaction versus what we claim to trust.
In today’s reflection, you’ll discover:
1. How your calendar and spending reveal where your real treasure is located
2. Why earthly treasures come with expiration dates that heavenly treasures don't have
3. What it means for your eye to be healthy versus unhealthy in spiritual perspective
4. How Paul found wealth through suffering by relocating his treasure from earth to heaven
