A group of Republican lawmakers, led by Representative Thomas Massie, have introduced a bill to conduct a comprehensive audit of the U.S. gold reserves held at Fort Knox, according to news reports. This proposed audit would be the first of its kind since the 1950s.

The Gold Reserve Transparency Act:

The bill aims to provide greater transparency regarding the nation's gold holdings by requiring a full physical audit and inventory of all U.S. gold reserves. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) would be tasked with conducting a comprehensive audit, including a physical assay and inventory.

This audit would need to be completed within one year and repeated annually. The bill also mandates the disclosure of all gold-related transactions over the past 50 years, including purchases, sales, loans, and leases.

Proponents argue that the current statutory gold price is outdated and that a full audit is necessary to ensure the integrity and proper management of the nation's gold reserves.

The last comprehensive audit of the U.S. gold reserves was conducted decades ago, and the current bill seeks to address concerns about transparency and accountability.
