Protestants: When did the Church fall into error?

Protestants believe that the Catholic Church fell into error and abandoned the teachings of the Bible. The line Protestants will use is that the Reformers only sought to reform the true church that had fallen into error and idolatry. So, the question that you can ask them is, “When did the True Church fall into error? What was the error?” Protestants like to speak in vague generalities when it comes to church history. This question forces them to get specific with their claims.
