Gears was a massive asteroid that housed runaway mechanics. Over time, more neutral-minded factions began building it up as an emergency spaceship repair station. Gears continued to grow as it attracted peace-seeking recluses, freedom-fighting revolutionaries, job-hunting mercenaries, headhunting bounty hunters, pirates, smugglers and privateers.

Gears protects its own, and many freelance crews go their for new jobs, to trade on the black market, or to engage in things their homeworlds typically frown upon.

While Gears is technically neutral, if push came to shove, the Gearheads would much prefer to fight alongside the FSA than under the thumb of the NGO.
