When is the end of the age?

In Hebrews 9:26, the timing of Jesus' death is said to occur "once at the end of the ages" (NKJV) or "once in the end of the world" (KJV). The Contemporary English Version translates it "near the end of time." These are English translations of the Greek expression "hapax epi synteleia ton aionon."

So we need to ask the following question: is the end of the age a reference to the end of the Jewish age, which came to an end with the destruction of the temple in 70 CE, or is it an allusion to the end of human history? In order to determine whether this is literal language, referring to first century Palestine, or figurative, pertaining to the end-times, we must look at how Jesus repeatedly uses this particular phrase in the Greek New Testament, and the specific meaning he attributes to it.
