Dir. Larry Cohen Speaks: Why Watch "The Private Files of J. Edgar Hoover"? w_Trailer & Preview Clips

Mixed together a few clips with the trailer for this. Hoover was a communist hunter, he was also running a massive grift on it. I'll have give him the benefit of the doubt until I know more about it and say that I think there was some sincerity in his anti-communist maneuvers, and he probably really felt that way when he entered the force. He was appointed director under Coolidge before it became the Federal* Bureau of Investigation under FDR. By the time JFK was elected Hoover was gathering blackmail to preserve his position that had nothing to do with communism, and he was blackmailed himself by the mob, which means the FBI was a mob operation. Whoever really controlled the mob controlled Hoover. Supposedly, Lucky Luciano said Meyer Lansky took control of the Syndicate, but that is from his post-humous "autobiography" so who knows if someone else inserted that, or not. It could be true.
I get he impression from these clips that the actor played Hoover very well, and not in any cartoonish way that you'd expect with a Democrat director, but the director is a little too present in the film, with that script he gave RFK and then the waiter crying outside, and he is against FDR but not for the same reasons I would be. I do think the government should build files on communists, which is what all these lefties take issue with. My problem is building files on regular people. I doubt Hoover would approach a waiter in such a vulgur, off-putting way. No way someone that heavy handed could make FBI director. So it says more about the film director than the character. I'd see this movie though.
