JOEL was a prophet to the southern tribes of Judah and Benjamin, but he did not mention any king in Jerusalem because it appears that Joel prophesied during the days of Jehoiada and young Jehoash (2 Kings 12:1-3; 2 Chron. 24:1-2). The main doctrine of the book is the return of the LORD Jesus Christ to be the great King over the nation of Israel and the whole earth (Jer. 23:5-6; Hab. 2:14; Matt. 5:35; Rev. 19:16). This glorious time is called by the phrase the day of the LORD, which occurs five times in the book (1:15; 2:1, 11, 31; 3:14). The book of Joel contains 3 chapters and 73 verses.
