20) The Book of Proverbs

PROVERBS is a collection of short pithy statements of truth and wisdom. These epigrams set forth a righteous philosophy of practical living. An honest comparison between truth and error (1 John 4:6) or a similitude between similar ideas aids in developing proper discretion and common sense (Hosea 12:10). The words like and as open the door of truth more than the wisdom of the world (2 Tim. 3:7). God instills true wisdom by comparing spiritual things with spiritual things or Scripture with Scripture (1 Cor. 2:13; 2 Peter 1:20-21).

The purposes of the book are to know the truth, to know how to live the truth, and to know why you live the truth (knowledge, wisdom, and understanding). These purposes are hindered by the subtle devices of Satan; therefore, good judgment and sound discretion guide one's life and work (Ps. 119:66; Prov. 2:10-11; 1 Cor. 2:14-15). Most of the sage proverbs were coined by King Solomon (1 Kings 4:29-34), but Agur and Lemuel gave some proverbial prophecies in the last two chapters. The book contains 31 chapters and 915 verses.

The doctrinal theme is the Mosaic Covenant with a prophetic emphasis on the Tribulation.
