(Turn the Sound down during the lesson, if you find it distracting)
THE PURPOSE OF THIS VIDEO SERIES: Is to help make Speed Reading available to all children--WORLDWIDE--at an early age.
SPEED READING for
3, 4, 5, & 6-Year-Olds
Can 3, 4, 5 and 6 year-old kids really
learn to Speed Read?
YES. And a few of them have already been
learning how to Speed Read for over 200 years.
Nowadays, we call them “Natural Speed Readers.”
In many cases, Natural Speed Readers
learned to Speed Read “by accident”
before they even entered 1st grade.
Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) was one Natural
Speed Reader who learned to Speed Read
AS A CHILD, in the 1800’s. John Stuart Mill (1806-1873)
was another one.
THE FIRST STEP IS TO TEACH
YOUR 2, 3, 4 & 5 YEAR-OLD
CHILD TO READ...NOW!
You can use any method that you like: Glenn
Doman’s method, Brill Kids, Phonics—whatever.
THE SECOND STEP IS TO DEVELOP
EARLY FLUENCY
WITH REGULAR READING.
THIS STORY IS PRESENTED IN A
ONE-WORD-PER-PAGE FORMAT
IN ORDER TO ENCOURAGE
MORE FLUENCY AMONG YOUNG,
PRE-SCHOOL READERS.
BETTER FLUENCY in PRESCHOOLERS
NATURALLY ENABLES SPEED READING.
Here's what to do:
1) When your child has reached a level of
confidence and independence in reading,
you can begin introducing the concept that
he/she can now start reading QUIETLY and MORE
QUICKLY through the story. It's best if they are
already familiar with the story before beginning
this step (so read it to them beforehand).
2) Each "Fluency Lesson" should be short—maybe
a minute or two, no more. Perhaps only 30 seconds
for those who have a very short attention span.
DON'T BORE THEM!
3) After a day or two, tell your kid(s) that now
(ie. during "Fast Reading" Time) they are to read
the words QUIETLY and QUICKLY (no reading out loud).
MAKE IT INTO A GAME. Zooooom through the story--
but, while zooming, ask them to TURN THE WORDS
INTO A MOVIE IN THEIR MINDS
(THIS IS A KEY CONCEPT).
4) Do two (2) Fast Reading lessons per day
(if time permits--this will average about 1 minute
per lesson), and see how your children progress.
LOVE THEM. LAUGH WITH THEM.
HAVE FUN WITH THEM.
5) I am posting several YouTube videos,
beginning at one or two words per second,
and progressing upward to many words per second,
to encourage greater fluency among 3-6 year
old preschoolers who can already read
independently--but slowly.
The beginning videos (LEVEL #1) contain only
one word per frame, and are paced at about one
frame per second. Over a period of a few
days or a couple of weeks, many/most
preschool kid readers should be able to progress
from 1 to 2 words per second, with good
comprehension, just by using these videos.
The initial goal, then, with Speed Reading, is for
very young readers (ie. ages 3-6) is simply to begin
reading their normal books faster and more fluently
than before. This doesn't constitute Speed Reading
(yet) but it will certainly enable the kids to
open their minds to Speed Reading more easily
when they are ready for it (beginning in LEVEL #2).
6) 60 words per minute (ie. one word per second)
is pretty fast for most 3, 4, or 5 year-olds. When
they master 120 words per minute (2 words per
second) after practicing these LEVEL #1 videos,
they will begin to get a greater sense of
accomplishment in their reading.
7) I will continue to post more Speed Reading
training videos for PRESCHOOLERS in coming
days and months. These videos will progress
all the way up to many words per frame (ie. up
to 10-20 words per second, or more). (Of course,
these more advanced videos can be used by people
of all ages who may benefit from learning the
basic concepts of Speed Reading, whatever age
they may be, and wherever they may be on the
road to Speed Reading "perfection").
8) It is not necessary to push reading speed
with the children outside of their "FAST READING"
lessons. They will naturally gravitate towards
a reading speed that they feel comfortable with
(ie. faster than before, but perhaps not as fast
as they go during the 1-2 minute lessons). This will
aid the children in reading with more fluency and
with better comprehension. Some kids will find
that they will eventually read much faster than
initially paced during these lessons. Young
children have a natural ease in reading very rapidly
once they have been shown how. TWO KEY
CONCEPTS ARE: 1) READING QUIETLY, AND
2) VIEWING THE STORY AS A MOVIE IN
THEIR MIND, WHILE READING.
