According to a report by The New York Times, Canada's MAID law has expanded to include individuals without a terminal illness, raising ethical and medical concerns.
One of the most vocal criticisms comes from Dr. Joel Zivot, an anesthesiologist, who has described the MAID process as potentially torturous. He argues that the use of propofol, a drug commonly used in MAID, may cause a burning sensation in the lungs, likening the experience to "death by drowning".
He further notes that the inclusion of paralytic drugs in the MAID protocol may prevent individuals from showing visible signs of distress, even if they are experiencing discomfort.
