Ozempic (semaglutide)
Ozempic, a GLP-1 receptor agonist, is effective for weight loss and glycaemic control, but it’s not without trade-offs:
- Muscle loss: Studies show that up to 25–38% of weight lost on Ozempic may come from lean mass, including muscle. This can reduce metabolic rate and functional strength.
- Bone density: Rapid weight loss may also reduce bone mineral density, increasing fracture risk, especially in older adults.
- Dizziness and fatigue: These can stem from electrolyte shifts, dehydration, or undernourishment during caloric restriction.
- Brain exhaustion: While not a formal diagnosis, some users report mental fatigue—possibly due to reduced nutrient intake or mitochondrial strain during rapid weight loss.
Statins
Used to lower cholesterol, statins can impact metabolic and muscular health:
- Muscle pain or weakness (myopathy): A well-documented side effect, sometimes progressing to rhabdomyolysis in rare cases.
- Cognitive effects: Some users report memory fog or slowed cognition, though evidence is mixed.
- Mitochondrial dysfunction: Statins may impair CoQ10 synthesis, affecting energy production and contributing to fatigue or muscle weakness.
- Bone health: Some studies suggest statins may support bone density, while others show neutral or negative effects—context and duration matter.
Metabolic Health
While these drugs can improve markers like HbA1c or LDL, they may also:
