2016: In his last year in office, the United States dropped at least 26,171 bombs, primarily in Syria and Iraq. This translates to about 72 bombs per day or 3 bombs per hour.
Obama's entire presidency (2009-2016):
One source estimates a total of around 69,000–75,000 munitions dropped from 2012 to 2016, based on documented airstrikes and official reports.
The Bureau of Investigative Journalism reports 1,878 drone strikes authorized during his eight years in office.
A different source provides drone strike statistics for different countries under the Obama administration:
Pakistan: 413 strikes (2004-2018), killing between 2,366 and 3,702 people, including 245-303 civilians.
Yemen: 374 strikes (2002-2020), killing between 1,378 and 1,775 people, including 115-149 civilians.
Somalia: 263 strikes (2003-2021) including drone strikes, airstrikes, missile attacks, and ground raids, killing between 1,479 and 1,886 people, including 34-121 civilians.
The Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) reported that between 2009 and 2015, there were 473 U.S. strikes against terrorist targets outside areas of active hostilities, resulting in 64 to 116 non-combatant deaths. For 2016, the ODNI reported 53 strikes with one non-combatant death in these areas.

Overall Reduction: The number of US military actions globally has been significantly reduced, especially in Afghanistan, compared to the Trump administration.
Afghanistan (2021): Numerous airstrikes against the Taliban were conducted in Afghanistan before the troop withdrawal in August 2021. A controversial drone strike in Kabul on August 29, 2021, mistakenly killed 10 civilians.
Syria (2021): Two known airstrikes in Syria were authorized in 2021, one in February and one in June. They targeted facilities used by Iran-backed militias in response to attacks on US personnel in Iraq.
Somalia (2021 onwards): Strikes against Al-Shabaab and ISIS-Somalia have been conducted at the request of the Somali government.
Yemen and Red Sea (2024-2025): The US, often with the UK and other allies, has launched numerous strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen and the Red Sea since January 2024. These strikes are in response to Houthi attacks on commercial and military vessels. A December 2024 report indicated over 260 strikes by the US and its partners.
Iraq and Syria (post-October 2023): Strikes against Iran-backed militia groups in Iraq and Syria have increased since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas conflict in October 2023. The Biden administration has submitted several 48-hour reports to Congress regarding these actions, citing inherent Article II power.
