Don't Force

It seems that many parents who have put their kids into organized sports are trying to orchestrate their child's way to success. They put them into academies or camps or get them tutors and various other efforts in the hopes that their kids will "make it" in those sports. What all of this orchestration does not account for is the motivation and desire of their child.
Yes, a parent could introduce their child to a sport in informal settings. The U.S. Open in golf this year, J.J. Spaun never had a golf lesson growing up. He would golf with his parents and just picked it up on his own. His dad did set up a net in their garage that J.J. could hit golf balls into. He played high school golf, but receive very few offers from colleges. He walked on at San Diego State and blossomed. He turned pro on the Canadian Tour. and then to the Web.Com Tour and lost his cards at various times including the Korn Ferry Tour. Eventually he made it to PGA Tour and had ups and downs. After 147 tour starts, he won the Valero Texas Open in 2022. Ups and downs continued though. At the start of 2025, he said that he felt lost in his golf game, he said if he lost his card again he would quit golf. However he lost in a playoff at the Players Championship and then won the U.S. Open. Again, he never took a lesson growing up, but he had desire and stuck with it, parents should not try to orchestrate their child's future in anything, just introduce them to various things.
