BLEMMYES: ANCIENT TRIBES OF HEADLESS MEN

The Blemmyes, also known as Sternophthalmoi or "Chest-Eyes", were a tribe of headless, men with their faces set upon their chests. The Chest-Eyes were popular in Medieval bestiaries and in the Terra Incognita illustrations of maps.

Ancient historical texts recorded their existence all over the world, from Africa to Greece and beyond. Explorers and scholars wrote of the Blemmyes, including Christopher Columbus and Herodotus. They documented what they saw with their own eyes, but somewhere down the line, these strange-looking people became merely a fairy tale.

On this episode, Jessica and Dr. Dennis Carroll explore the ancient race of Blemmyes and other lost civilizations of beings that once inhabited this earth but became only known as fairy tales over the centuries.
