12. Al-Bukhāri's Methodology and Quranic Foundation | Shaykh Ahmad Musa Jibril (حفظه الله)

The Shaykh (حفظه الله) now turns to the central objective of Kitāb At-Tawḥīd in Sahīh Al-Bukhāri. What was Imām Al-Bukhāri رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ trying to accomplish in this critical chapter? The Shaykh explains that Al-Bukhāri sought to protect and clarify Tawḥīd, especially at a time when deviant groups were distorting its meaning. How did he do that? As a student, ‘Abdullāh rightly answers: by returning to the Āyāt of the Qur’an and the authentic Ahādīth of the Prophet ﷺ. That’s the methodology of the Salaf — not to philosophize or speculate — but to return to revelation. The Shaykh parallels this approach with that of Imām Muhammad Ibn ‘Abd Al-Wahhāb رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ, who also sought to revive Tawḥīd by going back to the Qur’an and Sunnah.

Belief in Allah and matters of Tawḥīd are not subjects open to doubt, delay, or opinion. They are absolute, firm, and non-negotiable. The Shaykh quotes the powerful verse (Surat An-Nisā’, verse 65): “By your Lord, they will not truly believe until they make you judge…” — a verse emphasizing total submission to the Prophet ﷺ without hesitation. He also warns that falling into doubt about these fundamental truths is a sign of hypocrisy, referencing the verse: “Their hearts are in doubt, so they waver in their uncertainty” (Surat At-Tawbah, verse 45). The message is clear: Tawḥīd must be received with full conviction, based on revelation, not intellect or innovation.
