JIM VANCE's New Grave Marker - Hatfield &McCoy feud - Possible killing location ~ By The Hillbilly Files (5.11.23)

James Vance was never a part of the feud until he was killed trying to keep Cap safe from an illegal posse from KY that had crossed into WV. William Ferrell was forced from his home by the posse to lead them to the area where Cap was hiding. On the way there they met James and Cap coming down the mountain. The posse opened fire killing James and wounding Cap. Cap was wounded and ran. James was lied on at caps trial. He was dead and could defend himself so the tales began.
He didn't kill Asa McCoy. He was in Narrows , VA with the 34th Batt. Va Cav with Col Vincent Witcher. James was also a businessman employing 70 people. He was a constable for Perry Cline in Pike County Ky. A magistrate, and a soldier during the Civil War and a POW at the end of it. His grandfather Abner killed a Horton man because Horton threatened him in court a few day earlier. Abner never ran to WV. There was no state of WV. He spent the whole time in jail and hanged in Abington, VA. James never listed in any indictments for any of the fued. All kinds of records to prove he had nothing to do with it.
