Sayyida Nafisa, also known as Nafisa bint Al-Hasan, was a revered Islamic scholar, saint, and spiritual figure who lived during the 8th and 9th centuries. She was born in the year 762 CE (145 AH) in the holy city of Mecca, in present-day Saudi Arabia. Sayyida Nafisa came from a prestigious lineage; she was a direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) through his grandson Hasan ibn Ali, making her a member of the noble Ahl al-Bayt, the family of the Prophet. Her father, Al-Hasan al-Anwar, was the son of Zayd ibn Al-Hasan ibn Ali, and her family was known for its deep piety, scholarship, and contribution to Islamic knowledge and spirituality.
From a young age, Sayyida Nafisa was recognized for her exceptional intellect, devotion to worship, and commitment to learning. Raised in a household of knowledge, she was taught the Qur’an, Hadith, Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence), and other religious sciences by her family and prominent scholars of her time. Despite living in a patriarchal society, Sayyida Nafisa earned the respect of scholars, jurists, and common people alike for her deep understanding of religious matters and her spiritual discipline. Her home became a place of learning and spiritual retreat. She was known for her ascetic lifestyle, frequently fasting and spending much of her time in prayer and reflection. Her spiritual presence and scholarship drew many students and seekers to her gatherings.
Sayyida Nafisa married Ishaq al-Mu’tamin, the son of Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq, another prominent figure in Islamic history and one of the major scholars of the time. The union further connected two significant branches of the Prophet’s descendants and reinforced her position as a central spiritual authority. In the later years of her life, Sayyida Nafisa moved from the Arabian Peninsula to Egypt, a migration that would mark a significant chapter in her life and in the religious history of the region. She arrived in Cairo in 809 CE (193 AH), and her presence was quickly embraced by the local Muslim community. She became known as a woman of miracles, spiritual insight, and healing powers. Her reputation spread quickly, and many came to her not only for religious guidance but also to be healed and to seek blessings.
Her home in Egypt became a renowned center of religious education and spiritual consultation. Among the notable scholars who benefited from her knowledge was Imam Muhammad ibn Idris al-Shafi‘i, the founder of the Shafi‘i school of jurisprudence. It is said that he greatly respected Sayyida Nafisa and would attend her gatherings. Some reports suggest that when he became ill near the end of his life, he requested her prayers and believed in her spiritual status. Sayyida Nafisa’s influence on Egyptian Islamic thought and spirituality remains profound, and she is regarded as one of the most important women saints in Islamic history.
Sayyida Nafisa passed away in the year 824 CE (208 AH) in Cairo, Egypt. Her death was mourned by the people of Egypt and scholars across the Islamic world. Initially, her husband Ishaq al-Mu’tamin wished to return her body to Medina for burial. However, due to the immense public outpouring of love and pleas from the people of Cairo, he eventually allowed her to be buried in Egypt, where she had spent the last years of her life and gained immense spiritual following. Her shrine was established in the Al-Khalifa district of Cairo, in a place that would become a significant site of pilgrimage and religious reverence for generations to come.
The original shrine over Sayyida Nafisa’s grave was modest, but over time it was rebuilt and embellished by various Muslim rulers and devotees. One of the early renovations was done during the Fatimid period, a Shia dynasty that ruled over Egypt and promoted the veneration of the Ahl al-Bayt. Later, the Ayyubid and Mamluk rulers, although Sunni, also supported the maintenance and beautification of the shrine, recognizing her sanctity and widespread popularity. The Ottomans continued this tradition, and the shrine was expanded and maintained through the centuries. The current structure, which includes a beautifully decorated dome, calligraphy, and intricate marble work, is a place of spiritual solace and devotion. It remains one of the most frequently visited shrines in Egypt.
Today, the shrine of Sayyida Nafisa is not only a site of historical and spiritual significance but also an important landmark in Islamic heritage. Thousands of pilgrims, both from Egypt and around the Muslim world, visit her tomb to pay respects, seek blessings, and connect with her enduring spiritual legacy. Her life serves as a powerful reminder of the role of women in Islamic scholarship and sainthood, and her contributions continue to inspire Muslims in their pursuit of knowledge, devotion, and spiritual purity. Sayyida Nafisa’s legacy is a testament to the profound impact a righteous and learned woman can have on generations of believers.
With this, we ask for your permission until tomorrow and pray to Allah Almighty to grant us the ability to act on the Quran and Hadith, Amen
