Mike Johnson says War Powers Act is unconstitutional

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) declared the War Powers Act unconstitutional, rejecting bipartisan efforts to use the law to block President Trump from further military action in Iran following recent strikes on Iranian nuclear sites.

Johnson argued the Act infringes on the president’s constitutional powers as commander in chief and refused to hold a vote on a war powers resolution.

Meanwhile, lawmakers including Reps. Thomas Massie and Ro Khanna have pushed resolutions to limit Trump’s military actions without congressional approval, The Hill has reported.

Johnson defended past presidents’ unilateral strikes, emphasizing the president’s sole authority over military decisions, while some Democrats acknowledge past mistakes in bypassing Congress and warn against repeating them with Trump.
