Former Chinese leader Hu Jintao was once labeled the weakest CCP leader in history. He made international headlines in October 2022 when he was forcibly escorted off the Party Congress stage in front of the world’s media. But now, signs suggest he may be making a quiet comeback—steering the regime from behind the scenes. Even the two younger “Hu protégés,” who once tried hard to stay out of Xi Jinping’s crosshairs, have become noticeably more active. Is Hu Jintao back? Has Xi Jinping—and the world—underestimated him? And what would I suggest to Hu Jintao for getting China back on a better path?
