Tarzana, CA - Los Angeles police shot a man who was allegedly armed with a knife at an apartment building in Tarzana on Monday night.

Circumstances leading up to the shooting remain unclear, but police say that they were called to the 6200 block of Reseda Boulevard near Erwin Street at around 9:30 p.m. after receiving reports of a person with a knife, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Police said that the suspect was "in an agitated state" and was yelling from the window of his first floor unit at the apartment complex. They said that he was yelling and also armed with a frying pan, which he used to break the glass of his window.

"As officers approached the courtyard of the complex, they saw the suspect armed with a knife & an officer-involved shooting occurred," said a post on X from LAPD officers.

They later clarified that the suspect ran at them while armed with a knife upon seeing them in the courtyard.

The man, identified by police as 31-year-old Rafiullah Erfan, was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition. He has since been booked for assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer.

No other injuries were reported in the incident.

Police said that they found a knife from the scene.
