Jeroboam was given significant promises from the Lord that depended upon him listening to His voice and walking in obedience to His commands. The problem was that the king decided to create his own religion that was idolatry and a huge afront to the Lord who called him. This is a profound warning to every pastor who has decided that it is no longer important for them to hear or follow the Spirit of Christ.
