She used to sit on the verandah every morning, combing her silver hair and folding clothes with care.
Her favourite was a bright yellow saree — the one she wore on festivals.

We laughed, never understanding what she meant.
One day, she asked my mother to bring out the yellow saree.

She wore it, sat in the sun, smiled at us all…

Now, whenever I see that saree, I don’t cry.
I smile.
