Stuffing previous civilization under a church?

Every continent has palaces and cathedrals that we don’t know how to build anymore. It seems we went from the most elaborate, perfect stone structures to sheds and cabins and houses.
Who destroyed our previous civilizations and why are we still being lied to about it?
