News Report Trinidad & Tobago Saturday June 28th 2025

My Commentary On American, Local, Regional, International & Israeli News
Headlines:
The contracts of hundreds of Community-Based Environmental Protection and Enhancement Programme (CEPEP) contractors were terminated yesterday. The termination came days after the Government announced its plans to conduct a full audit of the programme’s assets, contracts and operations.
In a letter obtained by Guardian Media, CEPEP CEO Keith Eddy terminated the contractors, stating that the agreement dated March 21, 2023, was being ended effective immediately. He said contractors will receive one month’s pay in lieu of the notice and they were asked to return company property within seven days.

My Response:

What was the UNC supposed to do? Retain these PNM contractors so that they could force employees to campaign for the PNM in the next local elections & 2030 GE? Were they going to use them to participate in mass protests as well? UNC has a whole lot more house cleaning to do! When CEPEP is reformed and if new contractors are hired, MOST, if not all former labourers will get back their jobs! Don't allow the media to play with your emotions!

The 1% are furious that they're quickly losing control over the poorer class citizens who were enslaved via the CEPEP program. Having said that it's an essential service which should be reformed and employees given permanent positions with proper salaries, fixed working hours and other benefits, but it must NEVER again be used as a tool to FORCE citizens to campaign or organize mass protests for any political party, especially the 1% PNM weaning and taxing mob.

In my opinion there's no need for private contractors. The company should be absorbed into the City and Regional Corporations. Replace URP with CEPEP and provide permanent jobs, with a proper salary, fixed working hours and other benefits for all employees. These poorer class citizens are performing an essential maintenance duty and should have the opportunity to progress in life and even be able to obtain loans from banks. This should no longer be considered "temporary employment" because there's a DAILY need to clean our roadways, drains and public places here in T&T.
