Important research into Lyme disease is taking place in Maine that could lead to the first vaccine for humans. To make certain that this research can reach its conclusion, I asked Dr. Susan Monarez, the nominee for CDC Director, if she would commit to allowing the ongoing clinical trial at MaineHealth Institute for Research to proceed without interruption.

Maine recorded a record 3,035 cases of Lyme disease last year. This research is important, and a vaccine would mark a significant win in the fight against tick-borne diseases. As Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee and a member of the HELP Committee, I will continue to advocate for strong federal support for research into these growing public health threats.
