When God Says Run | Catholic Daily Readings | July 1, 2025
Catholic Daily Readings for July 1, 2025 - Tuesday of the Thirteenth Week in Ordinary Time
The fire alarm is blaring. The building is about to collapse. Emergency responders are screaming at you to evacuate immediately. And you're standing there asking if you can grab a few more things first.
This is exactly what happened to Lot's family when divine rescue came with divine urgency. Angels physically dragged them out of Sodom, shouting "Run for your lives! Don't look back!" Their response? Can we please go to that nice little town instead?
Even when God Himself is orchestrating your rescue, our instinct is to negotiate the terms.
Lot's wife represents all of us who struggle to let go of what's being destroyed. She couldn't resist one last look at everything she was leaving behind. That backward glance cost her everything—she became pillar of salt, frozen forever between salvation and destruction.
Meanwhile, twelve disciples are in boat during violent storm, certain they're about to die. Jesus is asleep, apparently unconcerned that waves are crashing over the sides. They wake Him up, essentially accusing Him of not caring whether they live or die.
Both stories reveal uncomfortable truth: God's rescue often looks nothing like what we expect, and our natural responses to crisis usually make things worse.
What disaster in your life might actually be God's rescue plan? What situation that feels like the end might be beginning of something you can't yet imagine?
Maybe the job loss that terrifies you is freedom from career slowly killing your soul. Maybe the relationship that ended was God protecting you from something worse. Maybe the health crisis was wake-up call to what actually matters.
God's rescue often requires leaving what feels safe, releasing what feels precious, trusting what feels uncertain. The tragedy of Lot's wife isn't just that she looked back—it's that she was so close to complete deliverance but still emotionally attached to what God was delivering her from.
When God says run, run. When He says don't look back, don't look back. When He says "Peace, be still" to your life's storms, believe He has authority over whatever threatens to destroy you.
