Roger Ebert & The Movies: 3-2-00
Note: Yes, the beginning of Chicago Sun-Times' film columnist, Richard Roeper step in for the very first time in the new Millennium as a guest critic. Just a few months before he became a permanent co-host throughout almost an entire decade since mid July, 2000 until late August, 2008 when he left for the two Bens (Lyons and Mankiewicz) and then, A.O. Scott and Michael Phillips. Both of which their seasons were short-lived. If anything, the show wasn't the same since. Therefore, I combined Don Gorelick's aka "Oakley Tapes" recording for the commercials, sponsors and credits edited together with Scott's High Quality recording as found on Larry Koehn's website. The episode is now full-length complete!
Roger Ebert and Guest Critic, Richard Roeper reviews "Drowning Mona" (While it's no Agatha Christie Murder Mystery nor "Rashomon". It's basically a screwball mystery comedy featuring Bette Midler and Danny DeVito in their second collaboration since "Ruthless People" even though she was only in flashbacks leading to Yugo cars as a subplot. Also stars Jamie Lee Curtis, Will Ferrell, Neve Campbell, Casey Affleck and William Fichtner. I really enjoy it in my opinion.); "My Dog Skip" (Delightful Family Film about a boy and his wonderful canine Jack Russell Terrier! Starring: Frankie Muniz from "Malcolm in the Middle" along with Kevin Bacon and Diane Lane.); "What Planet Are You From?" (Garry Shandling's Bizarre Sci-Fi Comedy about a male alien trying to find love. With Greg Kinnear, Sir Ben Kingsley, John Goodman, Janeane Garofalo and Annette Benning. I have a soft spot and love it too! I still miss Gary!); "The Next Best Thing" (More like the Next Worst Thing! With Madonna in another string of bad movies teaming up with Rupert Everett in another bad movie after his disastrous overseen performance of "Dr. Claw" in "Inspector Gadget" and Benjamin Bratt who would be in just several months away to the worst comedy and his second collaboration with Sandra Bullock since "Demolition Man", called "Miss Congeniality". Anyway, it's a romantic comedy about two best friends who would become the next best couple, except one of them is gay and who will be the true father? This is no "Will & Grace"; a excellent NBC sitcom better than this drench! It's directed by none other than "Midnight Cowboy's" John Schlesinger.) and "Miss Julie".
Video Pick of the Week: Ebert's pick is "The John Belushi Collection" with Collector's Edition of 3 of his classic comedies, "National Lampoon's Animal House", "1941" and "The Blues Brothers". (He was a very talented and hilarious comedian! I really miss him!) And a recap of Today's program.
Recorded on KATU ABC 2 in Portland, Oregon with Commercials intact.
