In 1519, Cortés and his forces, along with their Tlaxcalan allies, carried out a massacre in the city of Cholula, resulting in the deaths of thousands of inhabitants, including nobles. According to Cortés's own accounts, 3,000 people were killed in just two hours. Some accounts suggest the massacre was a preemptive strike based on suspicions of an ambush, while others describe it as a planned slaughter of unarmed civilians.
Kidnapping and assassination of Moctezuma: Cortés detained the Aztec emperor Montezuma, holding him captive in his own palace. He was assassinated by the Spanish.
Massacre of Templo Mayor: During a religious ceremony, Cortés's lieutenant, Pedro de Alvarado, ordered the slaughter of several hundred Aztec nobles and warriors, sparking a revolt.
Torture and execution of Cuahtemoc: After the fall of Tenochtitlan, the Aztec capital, Cortés had Cuahtemoc, the new Aztec ruler, tortured to reveal the location of hidden Aztec treasures. Eventually, Cuahtemoc was executed.
Enslavement of people: Cortés enslaved Indigenous people throughout the conquest.
