Conflict Theory, the foundation of Communist ideology, was developed by Karl Marx. It posits a perpetual struggle between a small group of individuals who control the means of production (the bourgeoisie) and the larger working class (the proletariat). Marx argued that this class conflict underlies all societies and would inevitably lead to revolution. Although Marxist theory has been largely dismissed in the United States for decades, growing economic hardship is prompting increased interest in these ideas.
