Admiral Richard E. Byrd’s deep connection to Freemasonry was more than symbolic—it played a meaningful role throughout his life and polar expeditions. Initiated in 1921 into Federal Lodge No. 1 in Washington, D.C., Byrd rose to become a 33rd Degree Mason, one of the highest honors in the Scottish Rite. His 1929 expedition to Antarctica, funded in part by elite financiers like the Rockefellers, included ritualistic elements—most famously the symbolic planting of a Masonic flag at the South Pole.
