It also forbids punishing children for their parents' sins (and vice versa), underscoring individual responsibility. Special care is emphasized for the marginalized—foreigners, orphans, and widows—requiring that some of the harvest be left for them. These laws remind the Israelites of their own past as slaves in Egypt and call them to act with mercy and justice.
