Campeche is located on the Yucatán Peninsula in the southeastern region of the country, bordering Yucatán to the north and northeast, Quintana Roo to the east, the Petén department in Guatemala and Belize to the south, the Gulf of Mexico to the west, and Tabasco to the southwest.

The history of Campeche itself begins in the first half of the 16th century. Before that, the territory now known as Campeche, and the Yucatán Peninsula in general, was a territorial stronghold where the Mayan people and culture developed, probably for more than a millennium. The Mayan people themselves called it the Mayab.
