Democratic lawmakers denied entry to Alligator Alcatraz immigration detention site

A group of Florida Democratic lawmakers was blocked Thursday from entering the Alligator Alcatraz immigrant detention facility in the Everglades, despite claiming legal authority for an official inspection.

Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried criticized the DeSantis administration, questioning what they were trying to hide.

Lawmakers said they had a responsibility to inspect conditions and prevent potential abuse, CBS News has reported.

The facility, quickly built at the Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport, has begun receiving detainees and is intended to house thousands as part of expanded deportation efforts under the Trump administration.
