On June 22, 2025, Tesla officially launched its highly anticipated Robotaxi pilot in geofenced zones of South Austin, deploying a select fleet of 10–20 modified Model Y EVs to ride-hail passengers at a promotional flat rate of $4.20 a trip.

This milestone marks the beginning of Tesla’s long-awaited transition from CEO Elon Musk’s decade-long promise of autonomous Uber-like service to reality. Each ride features a human “safety monitor” in the front passenger seat, backed by possible remote teleoperators — a safeguard that Musk initially said wouldn’t be necessary.
