Your Name Is Written in Heaven | Catholic Daily Readings | July 6, 2025
Catholic Daily Readings for July 6, 2025 - Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Jesus just sent seventy-two ordinary people on the most impossible mission in human history: go heal the sick, cast out demons, and announce that God's Kingdom has arrived. No training program, no seminary degree, no supernatural powers—just regular people carrying extraordinary message.
They came back absolutely shocked: "Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name!" Jesus was thrilled but told them something profound: "Do not rejoice that spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven."
This reveals something crucial about how God works through ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things—and what really matters when He does.
The seventy-two weren't the apostles or inner circle. They were regular believers who got sent out with minimal instructions and maximum trust. Jesus basically said: "Go find people of peace, heal whoever's sick, tell them God's Kingdom is here. Travel light, depend on hospitality, don't worry about having all the answers."
When they returned celebrating success, Jesus celebrated with them but immediately redirected their focus. The real miracle wasn't that demons obeyed them—it was that their names were written in God's book before they ever cast out single demon.
This challenges our modern obsession with measurable ministry success. We count conversions, track attendance, measure engagement, evaluate spiritual worth based on visible results.
Jesus says the opposite: your value to God isn't determined by what you accomplish for Him but by the fact that you belong to Him.
The seventy-two discovered that Jesus' power works through willing people regardless of their qualifications, experience, or natural abilities. They went out terrified and came back amazed that God had used them.
But Jesus reminded them: the real miracle is that you're loved by God, not that you're useful to God.
Your name is written in heaven not because of what you do for God but because of what God has done for you. This frees you to take ministry risks without fearing failure will diminish your worth.
