When God Shows Up in Your Worst Moment | Catholic Daily Readings and Reflection | July 7, 2025
Catholic Daily Readings for July 7, 2025 - Monday of the Fourteenth Week in Ordinary Time
Jacob is running for his life. He's just stolen his brother's blessing through lies and deception, destroyed his family relationships, and fled into wilderness with nothing but clothes on his back.
As night falls, he's alone, exhausted, probably wondering if God will ever forgive him for what he's done. He finds stone to use as pillow and tries to sleep on hard ground.
That's when heaven opens.
Jacob dreams of ladder stretching from earth to heaven with angels ascending and descending. At the top stands the Lord, who makes him extraordinary promise: I will give you this land, make your descendants numerous as dust, and through you all families on earth will be blessed.
This is moment when Jacob discovers that God's biggest promises often come during our biggest failures.
Same principle appears in Matthew's Gospel through two desperate people facing impossible situations. Synagogue leader whose daughter has just died, and woman who's been bleeding for twelve years and is considered ceremonially unclean.
Both are experiencing worst moments of their lives when Jesus shows up.
Neither situation looks hopeful. Death is final. Chronic illness after twelve years of unsuccessful treatment is usually permanent. Yet both discover that God's power is most visible when human options are exhausted.
Jacob's stone pillow becomes his altar. The place of his greatest vulnerability becomes site of his greatest revelation. He names it Bethel—house of God—because he recognizes that he encountered divine in last place he expected to find it.
This challenges our assumption that we need to get our lives together before God will show up powerfully. Jacob's story proves opposite: sometimes God's greatest interventions happen during our greatest failures.
Maybe you're in your own stone pillow moment right now. These aren't times when God abandons you—these are often times when heaven opens.
