The True Story That Inspired Jaws | The Jersey Shore Shark Attacks of 1916 | History in the Dark

Sharks, on the whole, normally don't bother humans. They don't see us as food, and though the larger ones are certainly capable of causing us harm, the truth is that if you leave them alone then they'll leave you alone. Most "attacks" are attributed to mistaken identity or exploratory bites. But, in early July of 1916 on the Jersey shore, there was one shark that didn't play by the rules. This animal was likely a rogue, a shark that behaved in a manner not normal for its species, and it proceeded to cause a reign of terror to spread among the beach goers that summer. Four people would be killed, one injured, by this shark and to this day we still don't know exactly what kind of shark it was or why it acted in such a hostile manner.
