Daytona Beach, FL - Body-camera video released Monday shows the intense moments that led to enforcement officers opening fire and killing an 18-year-old stabbing suspect who charged at an officer with a knife, according to the Volusia sheriff.
Deputies responded on Saturday night to the 1400 block of Derbyshire Road near Daytona Beach, where two people — a 16-year-old boy and a 39-year-old man — had been stabbed multiple times.
Volusia Sheriff Mike Chitwood said during a Monday news conference that the first 911 call was made at 9:28 p.m. reporting that one person had been stabbed. Minutes later, another person called to report that someone showed up at their doorstep saying they had been stabbed, too, he added.
“And based on everything that we’re hearing, there’s possible victims inside of the home. Other victims inside of the home, the stabber’s inside of the home,” Chitwood said.
The sheriff said other police departments responded to assist, and officers approached the home to “tactically enter the house to look for more victims.”
The video released by the sheriff’s office started with a deputy who responded to a residence where one of the stabbing victims was outside of the home.
“You’re not bleeding too bad, OK,” the deputy is heard saying as he is assessing the victim.
“I lost a lot of blood,” the victim replies.
The video then shows law enforcement outside of another home, where the suspect was inside. Commands are heard from law enforcement for the suspect to come out of the home.
Video shows the officers preparing to enter the home and then search the area inside when the suspect comes out quickly from a room and charges at one of the officers.
“The suspect in this case, Landon Watson, screams and comes right at a Daytona Beach sergeant and gets probably within a millimeter of him, or he may have even struck him, with the dagger. This isn’t a butter knife. It’s a dagger,” Chitwood said.
The officers inside the home opened fire on Watson, 18, killing him.
“I watched the videos over and over and over again. I am extremely proud and support 1,001% of what those officers did. They didn’t go to work that night to kill anybody, and they certainly didn’t go to work that night to be killed. It’s a sad situation,” the sheriff said.
Chitwood said the two victims who were stabbed and Watson had likely lived in the home together. Chitwood said Watson was suspected of having a mental health issue when he was arrested in June for prowling.
