In a striking display of double standards, Mexican protesters in Mexico City took to the streets on July 4 chanting “gringo go home,” demanding that American tourists and remote workers “self-deport” due to rising rents and gentrification in neighborhoods like Roma and Condesa. The American media has largely ignored or excused the xenophobia, even as similar calls for immigration enforcement in the U.S. are routinely condemned as racist or hateful. While Mexico's own president labeled the protests “xenophobic,” U.S. outlets failed to frame the story with the same outrage they reserve for Americans who support border security or mass deportations. Ironically, both groups are advocating for the same principle: preserving national identity and protecting local resources from foreign strain. Yet only Americans who demand immigration control are demonized in the media. This episode exposes the blatant hypocrisy in how migration issues are covered and criticized depending on the country—and the politics.
