Kenya: Anger Against Ruto Grows, "Saba Saba" Protests & Clashes Kill 11 | Firstpost Africa | N18G

Clashes erupted in Nairobi on Monday (July 7) as hundreds of Kenyans gathered to mark the 35th anniversary of the pro-democracy "Saba Saba" rallies, a day commemorating the 1990 movement for multi-party democracy. The demonstrations quickly descended into chaos, with police firing on advancing protesters and deploying tear gas and water canon to disperse protesters. Clashes killed at least 11 people and injured dozens, with over 500 arrests reported. This year's "Saba Saba" protests were fuelled by growing public anger over police brutality, corruption, and crackdown on dissent, exacerbated by the death of blogger Albert Ojwang in police custody last month. Kenya's human rights watchdog has also claimed that criminal gangs operated alongside police during the unrest.
