LAPD Smoke Illegal With a Gun
The officer involved in the below incident has been identified as Southeast Division Police Officer III Gloria Velez, Serial #41385.
Los Angeles: The Los Angeles Police Department’s (LAPD) Force Investigation Division is investigating an Officer–Involved Shooting (OIS) that occurred in Southeast Division.
On August 18, 2023, around 6:57 a.m., Southeast Division uniformed officers responded to a radio call of a “Possible assault with a deadly weapon suspect there now” armed with a gun in the alley to the rear of the 2100 block of East 103rd Street.
When officers arrived at the location, they located the suspect, later identified as 25-year-old Urias Saucedo, standing in the alley. The officers stopped their police vehicle to investigate. As the officers exited the vehicle, Saucedo sat down and removed a handgun from his rear waistband. The officers ordered Saucedo to drop the handgun, but he did not comply. Saucedo stood, began to raise the handgun with his right hand and an OIS occurred. Saucedo was struck by gunfire. Saucedo attempted to flee the scene on foot but was taken into custody by the officers.
The Los Angeles Fire Department responded and transported Saucedo by rescue ambulance to a local hospital where he was listed in stable condition. Saucedo was treated and released.
Saucedo is a resident of Los Angeles, and he was booked for California Penal Code 69 PC – Resisting an Executive Officer. His bail was set at $80,000, Booking Number 6661911.
The LAPD’s Forensic Science Division – Firearm Analysis Unit responded to the scene and recovered the handgun from the scene. Their examination of the handgun determined it was a replica-style handgun and was booked as evidence.
No officers or other citizens were injured as a result of this incident.
The LAPD’s specialized Force Investigation Division responded to the scene, interviewed witnesses, and supervised the collection of evidence by the Forensic Science Division personnel. The complete investigation will be reviewed by the Chief of Police, the Board of Police Commissioners, and the Office of the Inspector General to determine the thoroughness and accuracy of the investigation and whether the use of deadly force complied with LAPD’s policies and procedures.
