The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is releasing details and video from an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Duval Station Road on the Northside on Tuesday, November 19, 2024.

The incident details below are preliminary and may evolve as the investigation continues.

Sergeant R. Hoover had been working at the construction site off duty when the supervisor told her the suspect had stabbed a member of the construction crew. She began to chase after him in her car and called for other officers to help her. Sergeant T. Robinson joined the pursuit to help. The suspect led the officers on a chase, before he pulled over and exited the vehicle. The officers gave the suspect loud, verbal commands to drop his weapon, but the suspect did not comply. Sergeant Robinson deployed his taser, but it was not effective on the suspect. Armed with his knife, the suspect began running toward Sergeant Hoover. Both Sergeant Hoover and Sergeant Robinson shot the suspect. The suspect fell to the ground, and officers provided medical care until the paramedics arrived.

The suspect was identified as 39-year-old Benjamin Kubi. Kubi is charged with Attempted Murder, Attempted Murder on a Law Enforcement Officer, and Fleeing or Attempting to Elude a Law Enforcement Officer.

The State Attorney’s Office will independently review the incident to assess the legality of the officers’ actions. Once that is complete, JSO will conduct an internal review to ensure the officers acted within policy, a Response to Resistance Board will convene, and the findings will be submitted to the Sheriff for final review.

JSO is releasing this in the interest of transparency. Conclusions on the incident remain pending.
