How Trump Stepped Into His Own Trap
Trump is finally realizing he trapped himself in his own tariff bear trap.

China’s rare earth export policy is becoming clear: China won’t export raw rare earths, but if foreign manufacturers want to use rare earths, they can get them if they manufacture them into finished products in China. That is the only way they can get access to China-processed rare earths.

That means US defense companies will not be able to access them, because they are on the China export black list.

Trump has previously declared high tariffs on all products from China, and then suspended them for 90 days. That is how he got the name TACO (Trump Always Chickens Out).

Now, China is signalling to Trump that it has had it with Trump’s export tariffs game, and will refuse to negotiate with the US because China has alternative sources for everything it used to buy from the US. When it comes to exports, while losing the US market is a loss for China, it can build other export markets, most of which are BRICS economies.

Less trade with the US means less demand for the US dollar and for US assets.

From the Chinese POV, this is all the result of US policies: tech sanctions against Huawei and on Nvidia exports, accusing Chinese students of being Communist spies, etc. So the Chinese are saying “If you want de-coupling, we will give you de-coupling. But not on your US terms, de-coupling will come on Chinese terms, which means no rare earth exports to US companies on US terms, but on Chinese terms.”

The trap Trump set for himself is that he will be forced to make a decision on China tariffs when the 90 days run out, and when China has still refused to negotiate with him. What will he do?

If he goes back to 150% for all Chinese imports, ordinary Americans will be hurt really hard, and there will be widespread shortages all over. Americans will be angry, and they will likely vote against the Republican candidates in the midterms in 2026. If the Republicans lose the House, then he will be crippled for his remaining two years and life will be really miserable.

But if he does not raise tariffs, everyone will call him TACO. This will be miserable too because he hates that name.

Trump, and the US by extension, really screwed themselves.
